'Canes give Ruutu 4-year, $19M extension (AP)
The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to a four-year, $19 million contract extension with forward Tuomo Ruutu. The deal will pay Ruutu $4 million next season and $5 million in each of the next three years in a deal that runs through the 2015-16 season. He would've been an unrestricted free agent after this season.
Blue Jackets trade C Vermette to Coyotes (AP)
The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded center Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes for two draft picks and goaltender Curtis McElhinney. The deal, announced on Wednesday by Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson, would give Columbus a second-round pick in the 2012 draft and a fifth-round pick in 2013.

Tim Thomas took a relaxed attitude toward a start that was looking dicey. He wound up making 27 straight saves after giving up two early goals, and the Boston Bruins ended the St. Louis Blues' team-record point streak at 21 home games with a 4-2 win on Wednesday night. "There are two ways you can go in that situation," Thomas said.

Erik Karlsson is closing in on some team records in Ottawa. The Senators are closing in on a playoff spot. Karlsson and Milan Michalek each had three points Wednesday and the Ottawa Senators defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2. John Carlson and Mathieu Perreault scored for the Capitals, who have lost three straight.

Autopsy: Ukrainian coach hung himself (AP)
Officials in Philadelphia say the death of a Ukrainian hockey coach awaiting trial on federal child molestation charges was a suicide by hanging. The city medical examiner's office said Wednesday that Ivan (ee-VAHN') Pravilov (PRAH'-vuh-lahvz) killed himself in his prison cell. The 49-year-old Pravilov was found dead Feb.
Convicted sex abuser James apologizes (AP)
Convicted sex abuser and former junior hockey coach Graham James has apologized to his victims, his former players and the entire Canadian hockey community. He made the apology during a sentencing hearing for abusing former NHL star Theo Fleury and another player, Todd Holt. "I stand before you with regret, a word which has been described as insight that comes one day too late.
